Amazing, isn’t it, the way Asin Thottumkal came to Bollywood and easily conquered the film industry?


She’s the flavour of the season, everyone wants to sign her, and co-stars Aamir Khan and Salman Khan apparently cannot stop praising the southern beauty.

But, it’s hard to believe, Asin actually had rejected films like Bachchana Ae Hasino, Delhi 6, Karthik Calling Karthik and the very recent De Dana Dan with Akshay Kumar before Ghajini made her!

“It’s not as if I’ve come out of oblivion and suddenly made it big here,” said the actress who’s currently busy with London Dreams. Another film she’s thrilled about is the trilingual international project titled 19th Step that’s in English, Japanese and Tamil and in which she co-stars with the popular Japanese actor Tadanobu Asano. Asin plays an Indian princess who falls in love with a Japanese warrior come down to learn the ancient Dravidian martial art Kalaripayattu. The music for this film is scored by A R Rahman. And, Asin has to return to her home state Kerala to brush up her own Kalaripayattu skills for the film. BT spoke to her before she left...

You’ve just stepped into Bollywood and are all set to take off internationally...
I don’t see any border within India as far as cinema goes. I’m a product of Indian cinema but anything that gives me a chance to explore my creativity beyond Indian boundaries is welcome. As for making Bollywood my base, I’ll take up films that I’m convinced about. I have to quantify my presence in them. I don’t want to be just another adorning prop.

Despite refusing so many films you’re quite popular with Bollywood filmmakers...
Any other newcomer would have been tempted to take up the offers. But I don’t regret my decision. I have a certain way of working which many feel is my formula for success. Maybe I have luck on my side which I call the ‘X’ factor. I guess it’s the blessings of my parents. I hear the story, then study my character, after which I check on the director and finally the banner and the hero of the films offered to me.

Asin means...
Asin means pure, without blemish. I try and live upto my name. My parents didn’t want me to be categorised into any caste, creed or religion. If you don’t know me the name could be a boy’s or a girl’s. I have never heard the name Asin. Sometimes when I’m travelling, my papers describe me as Mr Asin. It makes me laugh! The letter A comes from Sanskrit and ‘sin’ comes from English.

What’s with Salman and you?
Even justifying it has become a big joke! Linking up co-stars is an outdated pre-publicity stunt for films. Salman’s a chilled out guy, very supportive. We have a good professional rapport.

Did Shah Rukh Khan recommend you for a Yash Chopra film and did you reject a film with Akshay?
Nobody’s come up with any offer with Shah Rukh, though I would love to act with him. And, yes, I refused De Dana Dan with Akshay because I didn’t have the dates.

How would you describe Shah Rukh, Aamir, Salman and Akshay in one word?
Aamir — dedicated, Shah Rukh — charming, Salman —relaxed, Akshay — active.

Let's talk about your website...
I decided to start my own website mainly because of all the rumours about me. Sometimes things said about me are so random, that it's upsetting. Earlier, the media used to be the middleman between a celebrity and their audience but now one day they say something and the other day they say something totally different, there is confusion all around. People who follow their favourite stars don't really believe everything a newspaper says, you know. These fans now are falling very far from the stars. And I want to connect with them directly.
So are you going to blog?
Yes, I will be writing my blog and also tell my fans, family and friends everything that is going on in my life. They will be able to post questions and I will reply to them. If I am shooting, I will upload new pictures, if I go out with my friends partying or something, I will upload them too. Like for instance, Priyanka and I had a fabulous time shooting for Fashion, but still there were stories of our catfights or what were not true, so I can post pictures from the set with us bonding to refute such rumours. I will also post promos of my upcoming films on my website.
What's the name of the website and when is it launching?
The site is called www.realkangnaranaut.com and it will be launching in June.

Let's talk about the rumours of your nude act in an upcoming film.
I don't know, how it started but people have just picked it up from some random website and nobody has bothered to check with me. I would to clarify that I am not doing any nude scene in the movie. Also I would to clear that I have never done a nude scene in Raaz The Mystery Continues. It was done with body suit et al. People are saying I am doing this bare scene because I am getting paid a huge amount. I get paid to act and not to do nude scenes. I won't ever do one.
What if it was integral to the script?
No, I still wouldn't do it. Because even though I am independent, I still have to understand and consider the feeling of other people's sentiments like that of my parents and the society that I am living in. Nude scenes is a very Hollywood thing and there everyone does it and it's no big deal. But Indian culture is different and we are different people and our cinema is very different.
You did Dabboo Ratnani's calendar shoot, which was pretty bold!
I don't know why people call that picture a nude one because you must have seen girls wearing low neck tops and cleavage showing one from top but I think people are not used to seeing the lower portion of the breast. It was not a nude shoot, and I was very comfortable shooting for it.
What does your boyfriend Adhyayan think of you exposing?
He doesn't have any issues with anything I do. He is very chilled out. The thing is that he looks at me as an actor. He has lived abroad alone for many years and he has seen much more than India can ever show him. He doesn't get shocked over anything.

Amitabh Bachchan on the completion of one year of his new passion - Blogging

Blogging seems to have become a leading interest in your life. When and how did you develop an interest in it?
It is not a leading interest, but I can safely say that blogging seeks my involvement every day. I had heard of the concept, but had no idea what it was and what it entailed. I heard of Aamir having one and during a discussion with BigAdda who were designing my website, I enquired after it. They happily put the whole concept together within days, trained me on some essentials for its operation and I made a soft beginning. It has been most enlightening since.

Did it occur to you that you may not have the time to pursue blogging seriously?
No. That didn't bother me. What worried me was my absence from it, once having started it 'seriously'. To me it is a wonderful medium to be able to connect with my fans and well -wishers.

What is it about blogging that you like the best?
The ability to convey individually and personally my feelings to the reader, secure in the thought that it shall reach them without any corruption.

You are an extremely private person. And yet you seem happy sharing your day-to-day activities with your bloggers' community. How and why did that happen?
I think this is a completely erroneous notion in the minds of those that form opinions on me. What may I ask, leads one to believe that I am an 'extremely private person'? Every day of my life for the last 40 years I have been going in front of the camera and exposing, or at least trying to expose, every possible emotion or attitude that I possess. Actors are indeed as transparent as they can possibly be when in front of the lens. You come to know how they speak, how they laugh, how they cry, how they dance and run and emote and.... What more would you want to know about them to declassify them from privacy? I lead a normal life, just as any other. If the media is not aware of it, or has failed to discover it, which in today's very intrusive environment I find difficult to believe, then the onus is on them. Just because media is unable to gather much about you publicly, does not mean that you are private.

How close do you feel to these faceless friends who visit you regularly on the blog?
'Faceless' is a harsh term. I refer to them as my 'extended family'. They confide in me. They show affection and concern. They get upset at times and reprimand me. They share their dreams and ambitions with me. They seek answers and opinions from me. They show respect to me as an elder. They abuse me and most importantly, they miss me when I am not there on time. Are not all these wonderfully domesticated attributes? And now very soon my server BigAdda is developing software where my readers will be able to put up their photograph on the blog against their name. So they shall no longer be 'faceless'. Also as we go along, due to the massive patronage in numbers from the readers, many more exciting features are being developed to bring them closer to me. We already have the MoBlog feature functioning, which enables me to write onto the blog through my mobile. And soon I shall have the facility to be able to record on blog with my voice, or dictate a message to them and then finally for them, in time, to be able to communicate their response to me via the mobile. The numbers are quite phenomenal - 25,000 number of visits per day, and over 100,000 page views per day. Multiply and do some mathematics on this from April 2008, every day and the figure is quite amazing. So this shall become eventually a huge exercise in communication management!! My extended family extends further!!

Amitabh Bachchan Are there any special friends /fans on the blog?
To me they are all special. Each one of them. Unique and sincere in whatever they express.

You've certainly enriched their lives by your presence. How have your blogging buddies enriched your life?
Brilliant question!! And one that I am so happy to answer. They enrich my life by their honesty and frankness. By pulling me out of my closet at times and showing me a mirror. By critically analysing events and moments. By educating me on my faults. By acclaiming creativity, not just mine but wherever they see it; a director, a film, an artist a colleague they admire and appreciate, or do not. A moment in time which requires attention and comment. Just such a vast library of information and expression. Some possess absolutely astonishing ideas and vocabulary, distinct and classified. Others bring forth their personal problems and expect nothing more than a patient ear. It's like being in a closed room with each one of them. I follow them and at times correct myself through what they suggest. I also disagree with them and explain why. A most enriching exercise all of it. Whether or not I enrich them is really for them to answer.

How much time do you devote to blogging? Is it now a mandatory part of your daily life?
I blog whenever I get the time. It could be during the day at work, or late at night just before dropping off to sleep. Sometimes, I convey rapidly, most of the time not. But I do convey everyday. As I write to you I am on DAY 271. Not a single day missed since when I started, in April 2008. And may I have the strength to continue in this fashion.

How different is your interaction with them as compared with what you share with regular person-to-person fans?
The same... No different.

Your command over the language is being oohed and aahed about. Has blogging polished up your writing skills?
I have no writing skills. I write what comes to my heart when the computer is ready to digitize my thoughts. The 'oohing' and 'aahing' is more perhaps, I am certain, because of my inadequacy in the craft.

Do you feel liberated of the need to put your thoughts and voice across on the media?
Yes I do. Liberated to give my expression as opposed to that which is perceived. Liberated to contradict a mischievous and evil accusation. Liberated to be able to inform in the correctness of things. Liberated to spread the literary genius of my Father; a due that poets and writers never ever achieve in their lifetime. Liberated from the fear of that sensationalised 'cut and paste' headline the following morning, the following week or following month. Liberated to share a private moment with those that understand and show sympathy. Liberated to have a voice without ulterior benefit. Liberated to feel the warmth and love from those that express, instantly. Liberated to construct a passage into my heart and head. Liberated to be able to challenge. Liberated to accept defeat and to seek the strength to overcome it. Liberated to criticize criticism and to acknowledge acclaim. And finally, liberated to stand up to 'wretched' puerile kindergarten rhymed opinion makers and be able to exercise the constitutional right of every living Indian ; the freedom of my expression.

Finally, has blogging freed you of the inhibitions regarding your privacy? Are you now more inclined to write an autobiography?
I am incapable of writing an autobiography!

Salman didn't buy me a house: Asin

How difficult was it for daddy’s daughter to work independently after her father was hospitalised?
It wasn’t very difficult. My dad
was never a baby-sitter on the sets. Between us, it’s a client-and-manager kind of a relationship. Since I don’t have a manager or a secretary, my father plays a three-in-one role. Recently, I went to Bangalore to launch the Bangalore Food Guide. I called him up at one in the morning to just wish him good night. Even then, his phone was engaged! My work-related issues had been keeping him busy so late in the night. Now, there is somebody to accompany me in his place. The only difference is, since this person is doing a professional job, the personal touch of having my father around, is missing.

Do you have your parents accompany you while shooting?
My mother, who is a doctor, has opted for VRS. My father isn’t there to stare into the monitor as I shoot. He sees to it that everything is organised, and then leaves. It’s disturbing when people confuse my father with the ‘baby-ko-juice-doh’ kind of parents who are always there on the sets. My dad is an independent thinker and never indulges in such behaviour

How difficult is it to shoot romantic scenes in your father’s presence?
I’m quite comfortable when he is around. It’s my profession. If I can agree to a scene that will be viewed by my parents in the audience, why won’t I be able to shoot it in front of them?

A lot is being said about how Salman Khan gifted you a house ...
How silly is that! I’ve been living in the same house ever since I went to Mumbai to shoot for Ghajini. I hadn’t even met Salman then. The media has got him to gift me a new house, someone to do the interiors and even adorned my walls with his paintings and posters!

Isn’t the audience mature enough to understand that these link-up stories are a part of the movie’s marketing strategy?
There are so many untrue stories and misquotes that I think many people would have become conscious of the media games. Of course, a percentage would want to believe it as a topic of discussion, even if they actually have doubts about it.

Can’t the publicists of a film be responsible for this too?
I’m not familiar with such a strategy. During Ghajini, I knew exactly how the movie would be promoted by first releasing Aamir’s look. But the London Dreams team has not discussed anything of that sort with me.

How differently do Salman and Aamir approach a role?
Salman is very relaxed and chilled out. He is spontaneous and even if he has done the homework for his role in his mind, on the sets, he does an impromptu job. In Ghajini, Aamir would come and discuss the role with me, suggest changes and seek suggestions. As for me, I prefer a mixture of both.

You’ve featured in the Lead India campaign to woo voters. Ever considered campaigning for individual stars?
No. I’ve been approached in the south, but I have always declined such offers. Be it difficult or easy, one has to say no when one doesn’t want to do something.

You seem to be ‘doing’ plenty of international brands...

If you’re referring to the commercial I’ve done with Nicole Kidman then you’re just being wicked. I’ve done plenty of modeling earlier, but when I chose to act I didn’t want to model. It took me nine years to make people realise I’m an actor. So after Rock On, Shekhar (Kapur) called me and said he was doing a commercial with Nicole and wanted me to be a part of it. So I sent my pictures, and films to Ridley Scott Productions and they approved. The result will be a sexy and funny commercial.

‘Sexy’ with Nicole Kidman?

Don’t get too excited, but yeah, she keeps taking off her clothes everytime! Ha ha, just kidding!

You tried to cover her up by gifting her a sari?

Well, it was Mehr’s idea, really. I was in Udaipur, its fab out there, yet Nicole couldn’t go out and shop. So I asked Mehr to pick out a sari for her. Nicole loved it.

Hubby wanted them off and wifey wanted to cover up?

No, I didn’t want to take off anyone’s clothes. She wanted to wear the sari but didn’t know how to, so she asked me to help.

You were the first guy in Bollywood with a six-pack. Now everyone has one. Home cooking softened the belly?

No, no! I love my wife’s cooking and I love food, but I’ve never starved myself for a six pack. It’s very difficult to maintain a six-pack, but when you want to get into great shape and work hard, it comes back real fast.

You and John seem to have this intense rivalry and he showed more than a six-pack – at the ‘rear’.

I think John has always had a great body. And he worked out really hard for Dostana to get much leaner. But I compete from the ‘front’, that’s why I don’t look him as a rival.

Would you do Dostana in English?

I’d rather do a Brokeback Mountain in Hindi.

With John?

I find Abhishek cuter!

Does your dosti with SRK post OSO affect your equation with stars like Akshay, Aamir, Salman?

No. Why should it? Shah Rukh is a friend and I will stand for him like a loyalist. I will root for the Knight Riders – not just because of SRK but because I like his team as well. I love him, his family and everyone knows that. So I guess my equation with others always starts with them knowing that he’s a close friend, so no one goes there.

'It is too early to involve families'

Deepika Padukone has been in the industry for just a year and half. But she is without doubt one of the most talked about people in Bollywood. And when it comes to her relationship with beau Ranbir Kapoor, talk and rumours are endless.

Taking a rather fresh and ‘honest’ approach, the actress decided to go ahead and clear the air.

Read on as she talks about her love life, ex-boyfriend and films to come…

A recent interview with a magazine saw you coming out full on about your relationship with Ranbir. You seem to have remodelled yourself and become free-speaking and honest!

I don’t think it is anything like new and improved. I have always believed in being honest and that’s what I have done here. May be it is also because now I have a lot more to talk about or have a lot more experience that I can share.

One thing that my father always taught me was to be honest when being interviewed. I have always been honest and answered whatever I have been asked.

It is also important on the journalist’s part to have the right questions as you need a guideline to stick to the kind of questions you would like to ask. And also, ask it in the right way which makes us want to answer it.

Does being open about relationships harm your image as an actress?

I don’t think so. It is important to be honest because somewhere I would anyway get caught. I have been always been very clear about everything that I have said, whether it has been about my relationships or my movies, their failure or success.

What makes you so open about your relationships?

Well, I think I also know where to draw the line. I am not someone who will hide it as I am not embarrassed about being in love as I think it is the most beautiful feeling. But then, as I said, I know where to draw the line and what happens beyond that is something I don’t think people need to know.

Since you are being all honest, tell us, are you uncomfortable about Ranbir’s affinity to Katrina Kaif?

Do I look uncomfortable or worried? (Laughs) I am quite happy about their relationship. They are just friends. All’s very clear and going well.

We hear while Rishi and Neetu Kapoor have accepted your relationship, Ranbir’s sister Riddhima is not quite approving. What do you have to say?

I think it is too early to involve families.

Ranbir is growing his beard for his next film. Do you like him this way or you prefer him clean shaved?

I think that’s up to you to decide how you like him when you see him.

And we hear he has been asked not to mingle in public much so as not to reveal his look. Do you miss partying with him outside?

No one is under house arrest!

Bipasha Basu recently said Ranbir is one of the hottest actors around.

I agree with her.

Talking about films, you did admit that ‘Chandni Chowk To China’s’ failure disappointed you. Would you be honest enough to admit that it was a bad film after all?

Absolutely not! Why would I be a part of it otherwise? Somewhere as an actor you trust your script. I chose to be a part of the film. No one forced me to do so. I trusted my director and trusted my judgment and sometimes you go wrong. But you learn from your mistakes. I definitely don’t regret making the decision, but yes I am disappointed it didn’t do well as we really worked hard to make it.

Akshay Kumar apparently said he would not like to work with you as you were unlucky for him. Your comment please.

I don’t think he would say so. We will be working together very soon in Sajid Khan’s movie ‘Housefull’. We start shooting in June.

Your next project is ‘Love Aaj Kal’ with Saif Ali Khan. Tell us about that.

Thank you for asking as I have been waiting to talk about that one! It is something that I am really looking forward to. Working with Imtiaz (Ali) was a dream for me. Not only because of ‘Jab We Met’. I have also seen his first film ‘Socha Na Tha’ and I think he is an extremely talented director. He is a wonderful person and that comes across in the way he directs his films. Also, ‘Love Aaj Kal’ is very different in terms of the role I play in it.

Saif Ali Khan says you are the most stylish lady in the industry. How do you react? What do you think about Kareena Kapoor?

I am actually very fond of Kareena as an actor. In terms of style, I think we actors very rarely get a chance to dress the way we want to. Usually we dress for a film or an event. We are always dressing the way someone expects us to wear when we go to events.

I think Kareena is looking fabulous after all the weight she has lost. But if Saif has said that about me then thanks to him!

Your ex-boyfriend Nihar Pandya will be debuting with Prashant Chaddha, the director of ‘Aap Ka Surroor’. What would you like to say?

It is something he always wanted to do. He always wanted to be a part of this industry. I would like to wish him all the best.

Getting off the track a bit, how much are you into reading and internet surfing?

I do read when I get the time. Internet is, however, quite restricted to just emails and work-related things. Nothing more than that.

It’s IPL season. Are you watching the matches and who are you supporting?

Yes I am watching IPL. As far as supporting goes, it is a tough choice for me between Mumbai Indians and Bangalore Royal Challengers. I am half here and half there.

Did Shah Rukh Khan invite you to South Africa?

Yes. But who wants to go so far. I wish it was here. I’d rather watch it on TV.

Finally, would you be considering any Hollywood offers?

Most definitely I would.

Exclusive: Shah Rukh Khan on his Knights

Kolkata Knight Riders have registered their first win in IPL season 2 and team owner Shah Rukh Khan now wants to put all the controversies behind and concentrate on cricket. He spoke to Vimal Kumar after the victory celebrations.


SRK: It's going to be difficult at times. People are not going to understand from outside. All I can tell you is: "You can love us, you can hate us, but you can't ignore us. We will try our best as humbly as possible. We will try and entertain everyone. We are open to be talking about the team the way we wish to. We love you and we are going to try our best. Whichever the part of the country you are in, make sure you are proud of Kolkata Knight Riders."

Q: IPL is shifted to South Africa. Rain is playing spoilsport. Your take on that

SRK: Weather is not something that even I can control or, you can control. It's unfortunate. But apparently, it is not seasonal rain here, either. So things happen like this. When the moment is big, the occasion is really important, small things can spoil it. But the idea was the IPL2 should be held. So forget the rain. Whenever it rains we just sing a good rain song. But beyond that, yes it's unfortunate. I feel sad that some of the matches are getting curtailed because of rain.

Q: You must be feeling happy that your team has started winning.

SRK: I don't think we have started winning. We have twelve more matches to go. I can't be happy so soon. But I am very happy that the team has started playing together. And inshe allah... as we go along the next twelve matches we will play together. As long as we play together, winning or losing is not important. I think if we are able to bring the spirit of the Kolkata Knight Riders into this, that is more important. So I am happy for the kids. I think they were very depressed after losing the first match. I am happy that they are happy now. But a long way to go.

"I wear a lot of seductive clothes" - Dia Mirza

What did you feel when you first stepped into the seductive red gown you wear in Acid Factory?
I was super excited by designers Shantanu and Nikhil's creation. And when I looked at myself in the mirror I said 'Wow'!

Would you wear something like that in real life?
Of course! In fact I wear a lot of seductive clothes and then all my friends exclaim 'Oh, you are looking hot!' It is only that the characters I have portrayed on screen were sweet and innocent, so filmmakers and people cannot imagine me as hot or sexy.

Would you like to do more films presenting you as hot and sexy?
I would like to be presented in many different ways!

How did you feel being the only girl in an all-male film?
I enjoyed all the attention my six co-stars, Aftab Shivdasani, Dino Morea, Danny Denzongpa, Fardeen Khan, Irrfan Khan and Manoj Bajpai showered on me during that 45-day schedule in Hyderabad. However, later I became one of them and then it was on a man-to-man level.

What if six men were to woo you in real life?
It's really never happened, but it would be fun. Like any woman I would bask in all the attention.

Are you likely to woo a man?
Hmmm, I think once in a way it's fun for a woman to chase a man. I would enjoy wooing a man, who is not paying me too much attention, because I would love to know the reason. He'll definitely keep me on my toes.

So what traits in a man would attract you?
At first instant it would be the way he carries himself. That would be in the way he greets me, my family and in the way he treats the help in the house. But of course with time, it has to be about how bright he is, how good a conversationalist, how emotionally intelligent etcetera. The list is long indeed!

Have you met anyone like that?
I have met a lot of interesting men. But no one has managed to have an effect on me in that way for a while.

There were rumours about you being close to Sanjay Gupta and Arshad Warsi!
As long as the people concerned and my family know what the truth is, I don't think I have to clarify rumours.

What made you take up the role of a nerd with negative shades in Jai Veeru?
Okay, so the film and I are not getting rave reviews but I don't regret doing it. I signed it four years back during my lean phase. Things have taken off since, but it does not take away the fact that I was signed when I was fed up of people telling me that I was talented and beautiful but not offering me work.

Otherwise what attracts you to a film?
I leave it to my gut feel! My biggest high is when a filmmaker tells me that no one but I can do the film. Shoojit Sircar's Johnny Mastana (earlier Shoebite) is special because the director told me that.

In Johnny Mastana, you are married to a UK-based businessman and in Kissan you are married to a son of the soil. In real life, would the professions matter to you?
For marriage, lot more things come into play, other than a person's profession. Like how grounded he is, how he gets along with his and my family, how independent he is and his values .

What does marriage mean to you?
It's a life-long journey between two individuals.

Are you a romantic person?

If we win, I'll fly: SRK

Shah Rukh Khan is indefatigable.

He’s in South Africa to cheer the ‘boys’; injured shoulder notwithstanding. But he spoke to BT minutes before departure, not without his usual brand of positivity and humour. And he intends to hold the IPL trophy aloft with his Knightriders this time — but that’s something he’s not telling ‘how’!

So SRK, all set for South Africa? India will miss you!

Hey. Don’t make it sound so bad. I will miss India. Especially Kolkata. It was intended this way. But I’m so emotional about this that I intend to dash back in May, assuming we’re doing well, Inshallah, and doing something special in Kolkata with the people.

Still, a tournament that’s primarily ‘Indian-owned’, will it fly in Arica?

Look, it may be a foreign country, but the passion for cricket is common. And cricket is an international passion. The cricketers are international, too. So they’re recognisable faces. And though no one can match the craze that Indians have for the game, which is something I’ll miss and something that makes the Indian board the best in the world, it’s still cricket. Also, I think that people in South Africa love me, my films and my shows there, so I should have an advantage.

African beats seem to be pulsating through your new music video too?

Yes. We took Vishal Shekhar’s composition and infused some wildness into it. At first, I thought I wouldn’t be part of it with my injured shoulder, but I couldn’t resist. This one has some naughty, nasty, wicked lyrics and beats added. It’s ‘cool’ like the youngsters say.

How confident are you about your team this time? Last time you were disappointed...

Not disappointed, I was sad. I wished success for the boys who stuck it out with us. It wasn’t as much SRK’s team as it was their own. I was sad because my son was sad about it. We hope to raise the standard this time. Now that the venue has shifted, losing is NOT an option. But NOT learning to be losers is an option that’s always with us.

Today IPL season is considered ‘no release’ zone for movies. Do you feel a sense of guilt when movies don’t fare well or do not release at all?

You know, I’ve always been passionate about sports. I want to promote it in every which way. And I’m an entertainer. I love the big stage. I do movies, TV, stage-shows, sports – whatever it takes. Yes, IPL did affect some last year, it hit my TV show too. But we’ve tried to work around exams, holidays and made it easier. It’s just another entertainment platform and more and more like Bollywood what with Preity, Juhi, Shilpa and many more joining in.

Last year, you wrapped your legs around Shoaib Akhtar in excitement? This year?

This year, post surgery, I can’t even raise my hand to signal ‘sixes’. I can only signal ‘fours’. No leg wrapping around this time. I will refrain. But if we win, then leave alone jumping, I’ll fly.

And now that you’ve shaken hands with Aamir, will another Khan be next?

Like I’ve said before, I don’t plan so far ahead as to how my day will unfold, or who I have to shake hands with. I don’t strategize about those things. I simply strategize about how to win on the field and in the movie theatres.”

'Kareena Kapoor Khan sounds good'

What the actress will call herself after marriage and what it is like being on Bollywood power list…


She admits that no position in the film industry is permanent but at the same time Kareena Kapoor is excited after replacing Aishwarya Rai in Filmfare's power list. The actress says the position is both flattering and scary as it comes with a lot of responsibilities.

"I think Aishwarya has had a great innings. I think it's a great honour to be where she was in the power list. Power equations in the entertainment industry change minute by minute. I'm definitely going to try my best to hold that position," Kareena told IANS.

Kareena, who was seen in last year's hit "Golmaal Returns", admits the power comes not just from the movies, but also the products that one endorses.

"But I make sure the products reflect my personality. I'm endorsing 10 brands. Saif and I are endorsing just one brand together. We're going easy on signing together," she said.

It's quite an honour to zoom to the top 10 of the power list and to be the only woman there.

It's flattering. And it's scary. Lots of responsibilities. My power comes from my honesty to myself and to my work. I've always done things that come naturally from my heart. It's amazing that I'm in the power list although I've never applied much thought to the process of getting there. I'm all heart, as you well know. At the end of the day, being true to myself is very important.

Earlier Aishwarya Rai was in the Top 10 list.

Yes, I know. Everyone has a chance to be in a certain position. I think Aishwarya has had a great innings. I think it's a great honour to be where she was in the power list. Power equations in the entertainment industry change minute by minute. I'm definitely going to try my best to hold that position.

The position makes me feel very responsible. I want to keep doing the kind of work that will keep me in that list. Last year I was seen in a successful film 'Golmaal Returns' where I didn't have a pivotal role. Strangely audiences expect me to take centre stage all the time.

How much of this power comes in a package with beau Saif Ali Khan?

We can't deny he's also one of the hottest actors in the industry. I think we are blend of looks and spirit. Saif and I are very alike. He also follows his heart and is very honest in what he does. Whether it's his professional or personal life, he comes clean.

The power comes not just from the movies but also the products that you endorse.

I agree. But I make sure the products reflect my personality. My products are young, zestful, fun and classy. Yeah, I do a lot of endorsements. I'm endorsing 10 brands. Curiously Saif and I are endorsing just one brand together. We're going easy on signing together.

So will you continue to be known as Kareena Kapoor after marriage?

I haven't thought of it. Kareena Kapoor Khan sounds good. I leave the decision to Saif.

Did (close friend) Amrita Arora's marriage make you wishful for your own?

I am with Saif constantly. For us, marriage is just a piece of paper.
