Exclusive: Read the synopsis of Hrithik-Kangna-Barbara starrer Kites

One of the most eagerly awaited films of the year is the Hrithik Roshan- Kangna Ranaut- Barbara Mori starrer Kites. While the film is likely to hit theatres only in the latter half of the year, it has already generated tremendous buzz among the trade circles. Everything right from Hrithik's sizzling hot chemistry with Barbara Mori to his super cool dance moves is being spoken about. However, not much is known about the film except for the fact that Hrithik plays a salsa dance instructor.

Big Pictures are in fact all keen to market Kites to international buyers, distributors and media during the upcoming Cannes Film Festival. In fact, a brief description of the film's premise is also mentioned in some websites which provide information about this year's Cannes International Film Festival.

The premise of the film goes like this:-

In the harsh terrain of the Mexican desert, a mortally wounded man is left for dead in the heat of the desert sun. This is J (Hrithik Roshan) - once a street smart, carefree young guy and now a wanted man. As death looms, the only thing that keeps him alive is the quest to find the love of his life, Natasha (Barbara Mori). A woman, betrothed to another man, surely destined for J. A woman, who comes into his life like a bolt of lightning, and changes his life forever.

Love is a moment. The moment J and Natasha saw each other, words were not necessary. In that moment, they knew instantly that they belonged together. But, something went wrong. The ensuing fight of the two lovers results in a deadly chase. J battles death but nothing can prepare him for what he is about to discover.

Kites is a story of love that goes beyond barriers, boundaries and cultures. It is a story of passion that defies every rule, of a relationship which takes two lovers on a journey that is filled with violence and death, of precious moments that are unforgettable. Finally it is a story of betrayal that is beyond comprehension.

While one will have to wait and watch if this is indeed the film's plot, on first reading it does seem very exciting and intriguing.

'Thank you God, thank you Mom,' says Ranbir

One look at the comfort level between the mother-son duo of Neetu Kapoor and Ranbir Kapoor and you don’t feel the age difference.

It’s more like the two are friends, buddies who know each other inside out. One Knows what the other is thinking, is going to say, wants to say. For every time we put forth a question to Neetu, Ranbir would take the lead and answer, and mother dearest would agree.

“When we go out for dinner, I don’t even order for myself. I let Ranbir do the ordering, I know he’ll choose what I like,” Neetu smiles, adding, “My kids know a lot about me.” Such is the camaraderie between the two.
Ranbir admits he’s mama’s boy ’coz daddy Rishi Kapoor wasn’t around too much during his growing up years. And Neetu chose to be a full-time mother to daughter Riddhima and son Ranbir. “It’s essential to be connected to your children,” she states. That’s also the reason the two share an “open relationship” and discuss life, movies and almost any topic under the sun.

So what’s Ranbir going to do today to make Mother’s day special for Neetu? “Nothing in particular, ’coz I love Mom just as much every day of the year. Every night before going to sleep I say, ‘Thank you God, thank you Mom’.”

    Neetu Kapoor
    Ranbir as a child...
It was easy bringing up both my children, neither of them were the rebellious kind. Ranbir was a good student, but was more interested in sports and other extra-curricular activities. To which Ranbir adds, with a smile: ‘Actually, I was quite notorious, but mom wouldn’t know!’

The best gift that Ranbir has given you...
Ranbir used to make me wonderful cards as a small boy. I still treasure those. It’s not materialistic at all, just a pure sense of love and gratitude. The way Ranbir is, is the best gift for me.

Your fondest memory of Ranbir as a child...
Ranbir never got angry; even when I used to shout at him, he would pull my cheeks and say ‘Mom, you look so cute when you are angry!’

When Ranbir got naughty, how would you teach him a lesson?
Ranbir was very scared of the dark, so if he misbehaved, I would lock him in the bathroom for 10 seconds and shut off the lights.

Was there sibling rivalry between Ranbir and Riddhima during their growing up years?
In front of me, the two were extremely sweet to each other, but I was told that the moment I left the house, the two would be at each other! Of course, he used to trouble her like all brothers trouble their sisters, but those were cute fights.

    Ranbir Kapoor
Do you speak to your mother about relationship problems?
Mom is my best friend, and I can talk to her about almost anything. Except the guy stuff, you know.
To which Neetu adds: “I don’t interfere in his personal life, but I do guide him and give him my opinion on professional matters. But the choices he makes are ultimately his own.”

What’s the best advice your mother has given you?
Ever since I was a child, my mother used to tell me ‘Handsome is what handsome does’. What makes a man a class apart is what he does. Mom always pushed me to become a complete man.

From school boy to the teen years and beyond, some memories...
When I was in school, my deadline to be home was 7 pm! As I grew older, it went to 8, 9, 10 and then later. But after saying ‘Good Night’, I used to quietly sneak out and go out again. Since I stayed in a bungalow, it wasn’t that difficult.

As a child, did you get pocket money or were you treated as a star kid?
Mom was quite money-wise, and there were restrictions even with our pocket-money. We got just as much as we needed, nothing extra. In fact, I used to get pocket money till Saawariya! But that’s why both Riddhima and I have value for money.

Khans at Mannat

Bollywood’s reigning royal couple, Shah Rukh and Gauri Khan, are ensconced in a deeply comfortable cream leather couch in the living room of their beautiful home, casually dressed and exuding a zest for life which tells you why they command the love of millions.

We are at Mannat, a 7-storey mansion, in a living room that, with its sumptuous furniture, massive art pieces and oversized coffee tables strewn with silver champagne urns carrying imported wines, shows off the impeccable taste of the style diva that Gauri Khan is.

The Badshah of Bollywood and his film producer wife are disarmingly casual about what are clearly priceless artifacts. “When Gauri’s not here, I play cricket in the drawing room with the kids,” says Shah Rukh smilingly and we look around in alarm at the crystal, the designer furniture and the thoughtful art that could be victim to such boisterous family moments.

Moments before Shah Rukh enters the room , Gauri chats up informally, dismissing any notions of being ‘powerful’. “I have no power of my own, I’m just an extension of him [Shah Rukh].” She quietly listens to us telling her that a lot of people look up to her as the epitome of grace and style and that she’s thought of as an enigma. "If I have any individual style, it has nothing to do with the surroundings that I’m in. I'm a lot like my father —very private. It’s not that I can’t, but I choose not to open up to media glare.”

    Sparing the rod?
Do their kids, Aryan and Suhana, take after their extrovert dad or her? “Aryan is extremely ambitious at this age. Just like his father, he wants to be a winner. Suhana is too young but is also very strong headed,” she says.

At that point, ‘King Khan’ walks in, and after a warm ‘hi’, turns to her and says, “jaldi kuchh khaane ko do.” She quickly gets up to serve some bhel puri and roast potatoes to everyone while Shah Rukh takes over the conversation. “I love my chidren, utterly and completely. Gauri often complains that I spoil them. But since I lost my parents very early on in life, there’s this reservoir of love in me and my sister Lala Rukh (who lives with them).”

Gauri responds, “He’s a brilliant father, but he can’t say no to anything, anything they ask.” He justifies, “Why shouldn’t I indulge them, as long as no third party is getting hurt. People say they want their kids to learn hardships by flying economy class. I have a different logic. If God forbid someday we face hard times, they anyway won’t be able to afford first class, so why deny them something right now?”

He chuckles, “Anyway, Gauri tries to be strict with us but gives up after a while. We do everything she doesn’t approve of, like playing cricket in living room or eating in bed, when she’s not around.” Are their Mumbai born kids any different from the ‘Delhiite’ parents? “Not really, except when they say ‘aajoo bajoo’ in a typical lingo. It’s not bajoo, it’s bazoo, meaning bagal (armpit). But they say, “idhar, bajoo mein aa”, which is very irritating.

    Compatibility quotient
As a couple, do they find themselves thinking and behaving alike? “We are at opposite spectrums,” says Shah Rukh. Gauri agrees instantly. “He is hyper-charged all the time. Wants to work 24X7. I like to travel…go on holidays, and he detests it.” “Yes I do,” says Shah Rukh. “When I’m at it though, I enjoy it. I never say no if the family wants me to go. They just have to say, “five days in London, or Delhi, and I say okay.”

He pauses to light a smoke, and she adds, “We are similar in the sense that we are both ‘home people’. If you ask us where we like to party in the city, we’ll say nowhere. Perhaps that’s why the marriage is working. If I was the kinds who would go out partying every night, he would kill himself.”

Where does Shah Rukh get his super sharp brains from? He smiles. “I’m not as bright as people make me out to be. Maybe I talk well and can converse on any topic, but that’s because I read a lot of books. I don’t know why people see this shrewd businessman in me. If Gauri and I take any decision in life, it’s for only one reason—that it makes us happy. For instance I've always been passionate about sports.

For 20 years, I looked at Manchester United as ‘my team’. I wanted Aryan to have a feeling of owning his very own team. So I bought the Kolkata IPL team because I could afford to. For the simple pleasure of being able to sit in a box with my family and be able to cheer for ‘our team’. But people looked at it as some calculated business move after much clever thinking.”

    Love and hate
Ask them about what they love and hate about each other and they have loads to say. “Gauri is a queen. I think she’s the most stylish woman I’ve ever known,” he says and adds, “I’m completely unstylish. I have over hundred suits, they are all black and look the same.” She clarifies, “Style has nothing to do with clothes. It’s just that I want everything perfect and appreciate finer things. Everything I touch and feel, the cushions, the glass I drink water in, even the towel in the bathroom, everything has to be just perfect.”

He smiles, “She amazes me. I wonder, how someone can be so passionate about a candle stand. Also, while I go overboard with everything — over thinking, over worrying, over doing…even over acting — I’m utterly fascinated by her ability to remain unfazed at all times. I ask her, “Gauri, what did you do the whole day? and she replies, ‘an amazing amount of nothing’.

I feel it’s wonderfully gifted to be so content. Also, I love the fact that she has never looked at me like a star. When my statue was unveiled at the prestigious Grevin museum in Paris, all my friends — Karan, Ritesh, Pultu —accompanied me but they had to convince Gauri to come along. There was this amazing ceremony in my honour and while my friends had tears in their eyes, she looked completely bored. She’s totally detached from the image of Shah Rukh Khan, which makes me feel that she’s in love with me, the man, no matter how successful or unsuccessful I get.”

Does anything about her annoy him? “Nothing at all,” he says and she immediately jumps up. “Hey, say something because I have loads to say on what bugs me about you.” She elaborates, “He’s a hoarder, doesn’t throw anything away. It’s so annoying to see things fall from his cupboard. Also he’s late for everything —not late by hours, late by days.”

And what endears him to her? “Oh, the fact that he lets me be. Doesn’t ever impose his lifestyle, his friends on me. Imagine if he were to do that, I would have gone back to Delhi, or hanged myself,” she laughs. “Also he’s not fussy about anything, not even food.”

Shah Rukh shares an anecdote at this. “When we got married, her mother would visit us and like all typical mothers, tell her, “Tujhe khana banana toh seekhna padega”. She insisted that Gauri must learn to cook and enrolled her in a cooking class. Gauri sent our maid Chandra instead.” Adds Gauri, “It was so funny, Chandra with all those high society ladies learning to cook in a five star hotel. But mom was very happy that her damaad was getting good food.”

    Family man
Shah Rukh says his image of a being a family man with no romantic scandals is “nothing great at all”. “That’s just how it should be. Just because I work with beautiful women, there’s no reason why I should be sleeping with them.

Also, I’m extremely sensitive about what my kids read about me. So I tell journalists clearly, “Write rubbish about me and I’ll smack your face. So no one writes trash about my personal life anymore. Anyway, now they think he’s got too old for scandals. Bachche bade ho gaye hain.”

Gauri echoes, “A marriage works, if it has to, despite and in spite of the profession. We are not an exemplary couple. Maybe a Mr Sharma loves his wife much more than he does, just that he won’t get written about.”

That said, Shah Rukh is clearly very much the romantic one out of the two, while she’s refreshingly practical. He sums up: “I love nothing in this world more than my family. I love what and who I have in my life. Allah’s been too kind, and I hope that’s how it stays.”

    Did You Know?
    * Shah Rukh Khan is obsessed with collecting houses. He says his parents struggled but couldn’t own a house, so he dreams of owning as much property as he can, in every city.

    * Gauri doesn’t know how to cook, not even make tea. The last thing she cooked was a biscuit pudding — in 1998. He still remembers it as the best he’s ever had

    * Their home Mannat has seven floors, and while most portion is unutilised, Shah Rukh refuses to ever sell or rent it out.

SRK’s top 5 moments with KKR

Shah Rukh Khan lives his life on his own terms: be it his films or his other projects. And for a while, it seemed like King Khan could do no wrong. However, his purchase of the Kolkata Knight Riders in 2008 proved that even great men sometimes make wrong decisions. The Knight Riders were bought by Shah Rukh’s Red Chillies Entertainment in partnership with Juhi Chawla and her husband, Jai Mehta. We pick out the top five moments that Shah Rukh has endured with his team.

    1. Last year at the IPL, Shah Rukh Khan and Sourav Ganguly disagreed over issues such as team composition, Sourav’s choice of batting first in the game against Chennai Super Kings and the entertainment tax being imposed for the matches played at Eden Gardens (Shah Rukh reportedly wanted Sourav to speak to the West Bengal Chief Minister, Buddhadeb Bhattacharya, about it, but was refused by Sourav).

    2. Initially, SRK was very keen to hang out with his team in the dressing room, discussing their strategies for each match. But later, the ICC Anti-Corruption Unit officials stopped Shah Rukh going into the team’s dressing room and the dugout during the IPL match between the Kolkata Knight Riders and Chennai Super Kings.

Shah Rukh had then said, “I like to hang around with the boys. I am very energetic. I am very disappointed that the ICC has stopped me. I don't know the ICC rules, but nobody dare stop me from coming to Kolkata. I'll be there whenever my team plays a match at the Eden.”

    3. Then, in 2008, SRK gave an indication that a major decision regarding the team would be taken by Coach John Buchanan. And this year, Buchanan decided on the multiple captaincies, which many in Kolkata saw as another ploy to strip local favourite Sourav Ganguly of captaincy. Buchanan’s idea was eventually shelved, but Ganguly didn't retain his job either, as KKR’s Kiwi stumper Brendon McCullum became the new captain.

Needless to say, Kolkata was not happy, but Shah Rukh said, “For good and bad, the Kolkatans love us one night and one night they do get angry with our decisions. But I promise you guys that the dream I have is to come to Kolkata with the IPL trophy and dance. Will do some new steps for Korbo, Lorbo, Jeetbo Re.”

But this dream is far from coming true now, as his team only managed to win one match out of the seven they have played.

    4. SRK selected six cheerleaders through his reality show Knights and Angels to cheer his team on in South Africa. But the South African cricket management did not allow them on the grounds, and he had no choice but to send them home, promising them work next IPL.

    5. After a string of defeats suffered by the Kolkata Knight Riders, team owner Shah Rukh decided not to go back to South Africa unless KKR started to win. He said, “If they are doing well, I will go back. Otherwise, I don't like going back and feeling sad for the boys, because there is a lot of talent in the team and a lot of hard work.”

Watch: Temptress Nicole latkao Arjun!

Arjun Rampal has landed a big assignment in advertising: opposite Nicole Kidman and directed by Ridley Scott.

Arjun's hobnobbing with SRK and his Hollywood guests seems to have paid off big time.

The actor has shot an ad with Nicole Kidman for Schweppes. The setting appears to be Udaipur's Lake Palace, and the ad has Nicole in the company of Rajasthani dancers, including Slumdog's Rubina Ali.

She then returns to the palace where hunky Arjun is waiting in anticipation.

The two almost kiss and Nicole unzips her dress... and then hastens into her room alone and shuts the door behind her.

A disappointed Arjun looks on and then, with a naughty smile, Nicole turns to the camera to say: "Hey, what did you expect?"

How did Arjun land the spot?

One theory says that the job came through Shekar Kapur, who suggested his name to the ad's director, filmmaker Ridley Scott. The other says that being present at all of SRK's bashes in Dubai and at Mannat for Robert de Niro, Gerard Butler, etc are paying off in terms of contacts for Arjun.

Scott has made the classics Gladiator and Black Hawk Down; and working with him, and getting a few more contacts is certainly going to help Arjun further.

We have lost a great personality and a good human being: Madhuri Dixit

Feroz Khan in the Swinging Seventies, with his flashy clothes and fast cars, cowboy boots, sunglasses and sideburns, could have given even Elvis Presley a complex... such was the Pathan actor’s flamboyance and raw sex appeal.

He charmed generations of women from the 1960s to, well, almost the late 2000s, starting with films like the intense Apradh and ending two years ago with the hilarious Welcome. Filmmakers reported that Feroz was always keen to continue playing the devil-may-care, sex icon he did in films like Dharmatma, Qurbani and, later, Jaanbaaz and Yalgaar.

His leading ladies, top Bollywood actresses in their time, naturally succumbed to the Killer Khan’s charm. They all said he made them look beautiful and sensuous on screen. And they said with broken hearts yesterday after hearing he had passed away to cancer at his Bangalore farmhouse, that though they couldn’t make it for his funeral, they would never forget Feroz Khan and would pray for his soul. BT got some of their reactions..

    Madhuri Dixit
Oh my God! We have lost a great personality and a good human being. My prayers are with his family. Feroz Khan directed me in Dayavaan. He was a wonderful director, much ahead of his time. His style quotient in real life was highly reflected in his films. He would shoot everything with great elan and style. He would allow the actors a lot of creative license, a rare quality I must say. He was a big-hearted Pathan, and I will miss him dearly.

My heart is with Fardeen and his family. I know how it is to lose a father! I did Jaanbaz, one of my earlier films, with Feroz Khan. Initially I was very apprehensive, because he looked very western, and I was not so well versed with such a culture and language. But he surprised me. Throughout, he conversed with me in Tamil and made my life so easy and comfortable on the sets. I will remember him as a warm, down-to-earth man who made me look extremely beautiful!

    Zeenat Aman
His death is deeply saddening. I was his leading lady and that was our primary relationship. Over the years we kept in touch and he would invite me to his premieres and film parties. He was an exceptional man! Not only debonair and charming, making girls go crazy, but a great professional too. He was so much ahead of his time, not just in terms of style, but also technically... and all his films reflect that. When I was in school, there was a strong buzz among the girls about this tall, good-looking Pathan actor. I didn’t know that someday I would work with this Killer Khan. His style expressed itself not just in his films, but also in the way he lived. It’s my privilege to have known him. And I will cherish all the good memories of my interaction with him. I can never forget that he made me look so good in Qurbani. Till date people talk about that.

This is a great loss to the industry. He was not just an actor, a director and a fine human being, but a great style icon of his time. I was already seeing Dharamji then, but I must say that Feroze Khan had all the qualities for a girl to get attracted to him! There was an air of arrogance in him which was very dashing. Agar itne handsome ho toh thoda rubab hona zaroori hai. It adds to your appeal. And he had this in abundance! He had a charming, flirtatious quality, but it was limited to the sets only. With his kind of looks and personality, he would always stand out in a crowd. I haven’t seen a greater looker or western personality among today’s heroes. Even though I was known as the Dream Girl, I never looked so pretty as I did in Dharmatma, the film Feroz acted in and directed. He used to call me Reshma (my name in Dharmatma) throughout the making of the film
and even after that. After our jodi worked, we did another film, but it bombed. Never mind, he will be there in our hearts always.

I woke up with this sad news and was deeply disturbed. It’s a loss to the industry. My prayers are with his family. I worked with Feroz Khan in one of my earlier films Chunouti, which didn’t do well and nobody remembers. But our rapport was great. He was an absolutely charming man, and I have lots of fond memories of him.
